Belgrade has welcomed 2012 with cheers, fireworks, fire crackers, flares, an outdoor concert in front of the Parliament, in private households, or restaurants and clubs of all sorts – be it at traditional taverns or kafanas or on floating boat clubs or splavs.
But, the biggest present Belgraders got for the New Year was a brand new bridge, the first new bridge after 40 years. Pedestrians were allowed to walk across the bridge at midnight and symbolically open it. Fireworks and an amazing display of lights followed. The bridge opened for traffic at 2 am on January 1.
Most na Adi, or the Bridge on the Ada, illuminated as part of the inner main ring is 969 meters long and 45 meters wide, with a pylon 200 meters high and has six traffic lanes, two tracks for the subway and two pedestrian-bike paths. It was featured on Discovery Channel’s BUILD IT BIGGER.
